Yacht Transport & Delivery
Move your classic vessel safely from seller to home port — whether across three states on a trailer or a thousand miles under power through the ICW.
Overland Hauling vs. Crewed Delivery
Overland Transport
Overland transport uses a licensed and bonded carrier with a purpose-built trailer to haul your vessel from the point of sale to its destination. This method is typically faster and less weather-dependent than crewed delivery, making it the preferred option for runabouts and vessels up to approximately 45 feet on the beam. Classic wooden hulls require carriers experienced with wooden boats — the wrong cradle or keel block placement can cause structural damage to an aging hull.
Crewed Delivery
For larger classic yachts or vessels that cannot be trailered economically, a professional delivery crew motors or sails the boat to its destination. This option suits motor yachts, classic sailboats, and any vessel where the owner wishes to keep the boat in the water. SeaBuddy works with USCG-licensed delivery captains who have specific experience with vintage diesel and gasoline engine installations and understand the mechanical temperament of classic machinery.
Timeline & Planning
Plan your transport logistics early in the purchase process. Reputable carriers and delivery captains book two to four weeks in advance during peak season. Confirming transport before or immediately after the survey allows you to synchronize closing, haul-out, and pickup so the vessel does not sit unattended at a stranger's boatyard while you wait for a carrier to become available.
What to Expect During Vessel Transport
Pre-Transport Inspection
Before the carrier takes possession, document the vessel's condition thoroughly with photographs and a written condition report signed by both parties. Note any existing scratches, cradle wear marks, hardware dents, and antifouling paint condition. This baseline documentation protects you if a dispute arises about damage that occurred during transport.
Blocking & Cradling
Classic wooden hulls require careful blocking that distributes the vessel's weight along the keel and along frame stations, not on planking spans between frames. An experienced classic boat carrier will inspect the hull before loading and confirm that their cradle geometry is appropriate for the specific construction. If the carrier cannot explain their blocking approach in detail, find another carrier.
Route & Permit Planning
Oversize load permits are required in most states for vessels over a certain beam width and height. A professional carrier handles permit logistics as part of the service. For very wide classic motor yachts an escort vehicle may be legally required on certain highway segments. Confirm that permit fees are included in the quoted price or clearly itemized as additional costs.
Insurance During Transit
Confirm in writing that both your marine insurance policy and the carrier's cargo insurance cover the vessel during the entire transit. Some marine policies exclude coverage while a vessel is on a transport trailer or require a separate endorsement. The carrier's cargo coverage may have limits lower than the agreed value of your classic boat. Identify and close any gaps before the boat leaves the yard.
Crewed Delivery for Classic Motor Yachts
Captain Qualifications
SeaBuddy delivery captains hold USCG Master licenses appropriate to the vessel tonnage and navigation area. For classic boats we specifically source captains with documented experience operating vintage gasoline and diesel engines, including older Chrysler, Gray Marine, Palmer, and Lehman installations. Operating a 1955 Trumpy is different from driving a modern fiberglass cruiser and we take that seriously.
Pre-Delivery Mechanical Check
Before casting off, the delivery captain performs a thorough mechanical check covering engine oil and coolant levels, raw-water strainer condition, through-hull valve operation, bilge pump function, navigation lights, and radio equipment. Any issues identified before departure are communicated to the owner before the delivery proceeds. Surprises underway are expensive and avoidable.
Daily Reporting
Owners receive daily position and status updates during a crewed delivery. A short written report noting fuel consumption, engine hours logged, any mechanical observations, and overnight marina details gives you confidence and a running maintenance record that adds to the vessel's documented history. This documentation is valuable when the time comes to sell.
